with Gianna B.

April 16 (Tuesday)
at 4:15 pm

Class length
75 minutes

Room name
Studio A

This class is a combination of our Gentle Yoga, which is a well-loved classic on our schedule, along with longer-held Yin Yoga (described below). This hybrid class is perfect for anyone new to yoga, to the studio, or to movement/exercise. It's also a great balance to a more active lifestyle, or an active yoga practice.

Yin Yoga
Practiced in a comfortably warm room, Yin Yoga is a slow-paced and enhances the ability to discover a still point within. Cultivating a Yin practice encourages ease in the physical body, mindfulness, and calms the nervous system. In Yin, we think cool, dark, stillness, and it is representative of the moon.
Yin Yoga consists of long-held, mostly seated or supine poses held passively to gently pull or place pressure on the body's connective tissues. In an active form of yoga (Yang), targeted muscle groups become heated through rhythmic, repetitive movements. Muscles being moister and more elastic, respond well to actions that heat and exercise the muscle fibers. In Yang, we think warm, bright, vibrant, and it is representative of the sun.

The ligaments and tendons of the body are composed of denser, rigid, or more plastic-like material than the muscles, and they require a different approach to unlock tension and move internal energy called Qi, and we will incorporate Yin poses to benefit and support specific meridians in the body, Since the Yin practice requires little-to-no muscular engagement or effort, the muscles remain relatively passive. Each posture is held for a set amount of time, while consciously relaxing the targeted area settling into the body's bones. Since the qualities of Yin by nature are considered more hidden and less superficial, these affected areas are not as accessible as, for example, the muscles which are closer to the surface.

In Yin Yoga, we will work with the five energetic elements from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal, along with the 12 major meridian pairs, both Yin and Yang, for balance.
Yoga props are often used to support each individual in practice.
